I grew up in the River Des Peres neighborhood near Carondelet and Morganford on Adkins. The river was my playground from Gravois East to Lemay Ferry Road. I Hunted rats, and other vermin with my wham-0 Sling shot, my bow and arrows and my Daisy pump BB gun. I would turn up Gravois creek and follow it to Bayless where I ran a line of snare traps for rabbits and opossums. When they ran 55 through it messed up my hunting area and I had to be very careful with my .22 bolt action Springfield. Those halcyon days are looooong gone today.
I just read half your articles after reading this one. These are AMAZING. I’m so glad someone is doing the work of aggregating and explaining local history like this, and I will do whatever I can to support this project. Thank you so much, so fascinating and so fun!
Awesome, thanks! Really all I ask is for people to help get the word out. I'd really like more people to learn about the city's history - there's so much cool and weird stuff about this place!
Lived on Marla Court growing up. 1972 thru 1992. Luckily, higher elevation for 93 flood. River Des Peres (peeuu) had days of smells! We all played & hung out under a creek bridge at the outlet to Des PU...(between Mack's junkyard & Weber Rd) cannot help but wonder about any toxicity. Those I'm still friends with & myself, have similar and extensive auto immune issues & many others. In 2024, I trust nothing from companies like monsanto. Wouldn't we like to know where all the Coldwater Creek type places are throughout St. Louis.
Wow, this was really great!
thanks Winston!
Interesting and extensive historic overview. Thank you!
Thanks Danius!
