The development company that owns the building is listed in the article (SphereAxis) but I don’t know more than that. But if you want to do anything using the building, I would do it soon.

I’m so happy you’re doing this work. I am a structural engineering student who will move to St. Louis and work full time for a company that ends up working on many restoration and revitalization work of buildings in and around downtown St. Louis. I love the work and love historic buildings, and sadly too many times the ability to save or doom a beautiful building is in the hands of a developer or other agency :(

thank you! I would love to connect when you move here. In the meantime, please consider sending an email to the preservation board. It would be good for them to hear from people that are outside the city to understand how big of a reach the story has.

As you may know, my Substack is about what local athletes do when they compete in the NCAA. Current happenings, if you will. But, I did find this interesting while I was researching an article. There are only two high schools outside of St. Louis that play Field Hockey, and it is pretty much a sport played by private schools. But, I found a Field Hockey team at Central High school in KC that played in 1917. The irony is that, similar to the current FH athletes in college this year, they too, had a season shortened by a pandemic. A history of sports in a metro area would be interesting, too!

Field hockey is only a thing in STL? I had no idea. That kind of sounds like a story idea right there. I wonder why?

As someone who had never heard of it before seventh grade, when I suddenly had to run up and down a field with adolescent girls, swinging sticks at my feet, I’ve always kind of wondered about it. But it didn’t terrify me as much as lacrosse, because at least most of the time the ball was on the ground. 😂

Field Hockey originated in Europe as a men's sport. Americans made it available to girls and women well before Title IX. It is predominately played in the Northeast, but has been in St. Louis, and with a small presence, in KC for some time. I'm not sure of the European history, so I can't tell you when the plaid skirts came into vogue. And I don't mean kilts in Scotland!

Any idea what the hotels plans are if they’re successful?

at this point in time, absolutely no idea. I’m really surprised that they’re pushing so hard for this since the hotel itself is closed.

Wow. A building with both political and artistic significance!

I'm very fortunate to live in a city (Winnipeg) with numerous historical buildings that have been well preserved and repurposed. I only wish St. Louis had the same.

we do have some buildings that are preserved and restored. There are lot of people who do care. The problem is, we have a lot of property owners that just don’t.

I wish there was the equivalent of you in Kansas City!. However, I am enjoying getting to know St. Louis better.

well, someone just has to start it up! I didn’t know much about St. Louis history myself when I started, and I still have huge gaps. I grew up here, but they sure as hell didn’t teach us any of this history. So I’m learning as I go. I’m also learning where to find out information – and that’s a process.
