The talks will be held at Spine Bookstore and Cafe, 1982 Arsenal St. Doors open at 6 pm, with the talk beginning at 7 pm. Enjoy an evening of learning and community for just a $5 cover.
The Talks
For our celebration, speakers Amanda Clark and Dan Fuller will delve into the remarkable life and accomplishments of J. B. Eads, the visionary chief engineer behind the bridge once deemed "impractical and impossible."
This program will highlight the fascinating engineering and political challenges faced during the construction of the Eads Bridge and its significant role in St. Louis since its opening in 1874. You'll discover the personal rivalries and intense work conditions, particularly within the bridge’s famous caissons. Our speakers will also discuss the legacy of the Eads Bridge as a symbol of St. Louis and its impact on the city's growth. Amanda and Dan will also shed light on Eads’ personal life and other notable engineering feats, including designing ironclads and opening the Port of New Orleans.
The Speakers
Amanda Clark: Originally from outside St. Louis, Amanda's enthusiasm for the city's rich history and architectural gems is infectious. In 2012 she established Renegade Tours, which later evolved into See STL Tours at the Missouri History Museum in 2020. This transition expanded her roles to include research, writing, and exhibit design. Amanda's distinctive approach to public history has earned her mentions in prestigious publications like the New York Times. Passionate about preserving history, she actively volunteers for the Landmarks Association and the National Building Arts Foundation in Sauget, Illinois. A huge fan of James Buchanan Eads, she served as the curator for the special Eads Bridge at 150 exhibit at the Missouri History Museum.
Daniel Fuller: Dan has been tracing his family history since 1997, uncovering connections back to the 1840s in St. Louis and the 1640s in North America. His research involves studying historical contexts to gain insights into the lives of his ancestors. In 2014, Daniel joined Bellefontaine Cemetery as a volunteer, becoming one of its seven Master Guides. In 2017, he was appointed as the cemetery’s first Volunteer Coordinator and later took on the role of Event Coordinator, solidifying his position on the Senior Staff. Dan has also served as a docent at Tower Grove House and led tours in the Shaw, Lafayette, and Compton Heights neighborhoods. He is a member of the 1904 World’s Fair Society and the Professional Tour Guide Association of St. Louis.
